Ravaged by natural disasters through the ages, this historic place of worship—one of Nara's seven great temples—was rebuilt in the Kamakura period (1185-1333), with its three halls (main hall, Aizen hall, and Shio hall) and Treasure House holding countless treasures. Visitors will marvel at the life-size statue of the Shakyamuni Buddha, or come during the Great Tea Ceremony to experience a truly unique and time-honored rite: drinking tea from massive tea bowl.
